About Paul Shapiro
Paul Shapiro is a bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and former nonprofit executive in the animal welfare field. He’s spent his career working to improve sustainability in our food and agriculture systems, with an emphasis on accelerating alternative proteins that are better for public health, the planet, and animal welfare.
Most recently, Paul Shapiro debuted his first book, Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World, that offers readers an inside view of the race to commercialize the world’s first real animal products that are grown without the need to raise and slaughter animals. The book received rave reviews, and was named a Washington Post bestseller in January 2018. Before the book’s publication, Paul published various articles and contributed to and authored other shorter works, including Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics and Animal Welfare in Animal Agriculture. He’s a guest on many news outlets, such as CNN, StarTalk Radio with Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Point of Inquiry, as well as dozens of periodicals. He continues to speak publicly, most prevalently with TEDx, about the food systems currently in place, food systems of the future, and the general treatment and well-being of animals.
As the founder of Compassion Over Killing and a former Vice President at the Humane Society of the United States, Paul Shapiro has had the privilege of spearheading legislative initiatives in order to prevent abuse of farm animals, engage with major food corporations to help end cruel practices in their supply chains, and increase demand for plant-based proteins.
Currently, Paul resides in California with his partner Toni Okamoto, herself an accomplished author as well.
On Clean Meat
The next great scientific revolution is underway: discovering new ways to create enough food for the world’s ever-growing, ever-hungry population.
Whereas our ancestors domesticated wild animals into livestock, today we’re beginning to domesticate their cells, leaving the animals out of the equation. And the story Paul Shapiro tells of this Second Domestication is anything but tame.
Shapiro gives you a front-row seat for the wild story of the race to create and commercialize cleaner, safer, sustainable meat—real meat—without the animals. From the entrepreneurial visionaries to the scientists’ workshops to the big business boardrooms, Paul Shapiro details the quest for clean meat and other animal products and examines the debate raging around it.
